If you have constantly changing data, and lots of it, then automation may make more sense if the rewards outweigh that risk. In my world this is workable because I don't have massive data changes over short time periods.
If you do it manually you can glance through the list of changes, and if anything weird pops up, you can avoid the problem before it happens. My reasoning is if you accidentally delete a file, the sync software deletes that file from your backup database, so if its automated you have no control over that and the file will probably be lost before you figure out its lost.
